hi, i'm new to using adobe indesign so i'll apologize in advance if this turns out to be a dumb question...
(i'm also new to newstoday and posted this previously and got no replies. am i doing something wrong? is my question that dumb?)
how can i measure the distance between things in indesign? i'm looking for something like the measure tool in photoshop. currently, when i need to measure something in indesign, i draw a box and read the values for width and height in the transform window. there has GOT to be a better method...
help, please.

Can't help you, but if no one on NT responds, you can always try the Adobe Forums.
http://www.adobe.com/support/for…
Look for Adobe InDesign about halfway down and select your OS.

If you're placing a frame just go to that tool and click one time on the stage (do not drag ready) than you should get the propperties for measerments.

Why do you so deperately need to measure things in inDesign?
- leftwave0
MiltonGrove, i didn't mean to sound so "desperate", i'm just learning the program so i'd like to learn how to use the tools.
in most cases, i can use the rulers on the window, but i'm finding there are cases when i want to know an exact dimension.
dippy, thanks.. i'll check out the adobe forum too.

while we're on inDesign, sometimes when I put 2 columns side by side, same Y position, same type size and leading, the baselines don't align. Anybody else have that happen?
- blaw0
Rand:
It's probably a simple matter of additional paragraph spaces in one column or the other.
- ********0
it even happens at the top of a column
- blaw0
damn, weird then. sorry i couldn't help.
- DutchBoy0
true, i think blaw is right on this one.

Rand..
hit command + b to get your text field options.
set the first baseline offset to "leading" and make sure all your text boxes are set the same.
if it is set to "ascent" then the baseline get's pushed down by taller letters on the first line. i don't typically ever use the default of ascent.
if you'd like to change the default setting to "leading" - hit command + b with NO text box selected. Then set the it to "leading".
that should work - let me know if it don't.

despite this, it didn't work
- Gorbie0
when you look at the paragraph options dialog box - does the "space before" option read 0"?

- Gorbie0
to get rid of the culprit try htting command + b - and change all the inset spacing to 0".
(you can also set it to 0" by default if you do the same with no text box selected.)
try that - let me know...

im a gonna bump this cos I want to ask rand and gorb if, as someone who has been mainly digital most of his career but has started doing more and more print, is indesign better than quark/illustrator?
- MIJA0
Indesign is still better than Quark. not meant to take the place of illustrator but to work better between apps.
So much better.
