This seems like a simple question, but I'm stumped.
I have two renders. One is of the animation I created, the other is a b/w render that I want to add as the alpha channel for the animation. How do I set the b/w animation to be the alpha?
Thanks.

check out the layer blending mode, (works like photoshop).... control+click (mac), right button (pc)
hope makes sense!

I'm familiar with the layer blending. But will this allow me to cut out an alpha for the entire comp? Not just a specific layer.

put both in the timeline, then go on the timeline to where it says 'trkMat', and select the gray layer.
test it by putting something else below those layers.

unless you are trying to render out the video.. to have alphas..
in that case you need to choose a codec like "Animation" under QuickTime, and then under channels (where it says RGB) change that to say (RGB+Alpha) and you'll get ONE video file rendered, that has the alpha channels in tact..
no need to do the black and white stuff.. aftereffects will know what's see through and what's not..maybe that was the direction you were wanting to question?
