Created a site for a guy. Gave him an exxxxxxtra sweet deal on the cost. Now he has asked for some of the assets that I created for the site to be used in flyers/posters etc... to be designed by someone else. I won't be compensated for the use of these graphics...
I was treated to a whole bunch of... "Dude... I don't see what the problem is" and... "I'll just import them from the site's swf if you don't send them."
I'm finding it difficult to draw the line. What are standard design practices when it comes to something like this?
Thanks

Explain that he doesn't own the site or the graphics created by you, just like he doesn't own the music on the cd he may have recently purchased... Copyright

Hire these guys who will get medieval on his ass. Simple as that. Violence has solved more conflicts than any diplomatic shit.

did you have a contract? i'm guessing not. there's not much you can do besides argue with him. if one party files action in court, it's your word versus his, and the costs alone probably aren't worth it. make a new contract asap and see if he'll sign that you own the rights. if not, give him the images and learn a big lesson. always make the client sign on the line before you start.

I think most cients would expect to have the copyright on their own company graphics (logos), and their own site design... but thats what you have to charge for, and what you have to make a contract for...

and access to the assets/source is a separate matter from copyright... again covered by contract.
