did you have a contract? i'm guessing not. there's not much you can do besides argue with him. if one party files action in court, it's your word versus his, and the costs alone probably aren't worth it. make a new contract asap and see if he'll sign that you own the rights. if not, give him the images and learn a big lesson. always make the client sign on the line before you start.
