yeah Savannah College of Art and Design is a good school, i know a couple of people who go there. they say it's a great environment as well...
i attended the Art institute of atlanta for a while and it was a pretty damn good school. but im looking to relocate so i left... also i heard atlanta college of art is excellent but it's more fine-arts oriented

An illustration degree is NOT a waste. I learned so much that it would have taken way longer to figure out on my own. Plus the whole critique/learning to take criticism thing is invaluable.
I've also gotten alot of dayjobs in other fields based upon my Ill degree.

I would go with SCAD,
I had quite a few friends that went there out of high school and love it. One is currently in her senior year for illustration and says it is a blast.
I personally wouldn't check into Ringling, they are about 40 minutes south of where I am currently, and they don't seem to have their shit together. Plus, besides the beautiful beaches, Sarasota is extremely boring.

Just because someone is working in a field other than the one they studied doesn't mean that a degree in that field is useless. There's no reason for someone to minimize receiving a degree in a respected profession.
Being self-taught is great, but being in an environment with others who have the same pursuits is great too.
I don't have an illustration degree, I have a BFA in Drawing and I work as an illustrator. In hindsight, I wish I had taken some illustration classes for some of the business info. If you want to study illustration, more power to you. More knowledge never hurt.

Okay--Unless you're a majorly talented illustrator, a degree might not be worth pursuing. Of course I agree that the more you learn, the better; the more education, the better. I only know one person (who's in pursuit of a degree in illustration) who'll actually make something of themselves in that field.
And Arthur, my degree is in design. I never expected to get any jobs in illustration, but that's just the way the cookie crumbled.
