ok i know this is a longshot.
i need a portable (not window mounted) a/c unit. cause my apt has bars that would not accomodate one. looking around online (eopinions.com) but none seem to stand out.

i just had this same problem! our windows are either too narrow or don't open wide enough so we can't get an air conditioner.
we ended up finding this thing called an air cooler that sits anywhere and cools the air down in the general radius of where it is sitting. it isn't as good as an air conditioner but it still works. i can't remember what brand it is and we got it at canadian tire, but they might be sold at wal-mart too.
good luck!

hmmm. never even heard or thought of such a thing.
how about a $10 fan placed stategically in the open freezer :)

Weird, i was just looking at those.
Maytag has a good one, but it'll cost you 499.99. It says it does like 500 sq. ft, but that is actually half of what it can really do. check it:
http://www.homedepot.com/prel80/…Its kinda cool, but w/ portable you still have to attach a hose to the window. Should work as long as bars are on teh outside.
It says backordered but my local store had one. didn't buy it thoug, I'm going with a window unit

that link didn't work, sorry. try this. or go to homedepot.com and type in air conditioners. it'll be the 1st one in the search.

I think delonghi (sp?) makes one with a hose that goes to the window, too

man i wish i could get a window mounted one. it would be a million times less expensive.
thanks for the links, looking at it now.

not sure what they have in nyc but if you have a menards, home depot or ace hardware they sell them there. i just saw one at home depot over the weekend.

just buy a bunch of liquid cooled G5s
then... rip out the liquid cooler, and liquid cool your apt....
