your help if you will...
i'm trying to take an illustrator file with lots of gradient transparencies and make a png file for web use
i'm having a mare- it needs some pixel by pixel editing in photoshop, but whenever i open the illustrator png in photoshop- the transparency turns white- and the data is too large to simply cut and paste.
the simplest way would be to turn the white level to transparency- but amazingly i can't find a way to do it-
please help-
cheers

double click the background layer
and hit OK
after that it is unlocked.

or do i miss something

yep sorry- to clarify- there are gradients in the piece that go through from solid black to transparent. basically i want the grey areas to be gradated tranparency as opposed to being opaque grey- so colour selection's out.

owkaay, what if you cut 'n' paste it from illy to ps in a new layer?

unfortunately- it has real memory problems cutting and pasting elements with gradient transparency fer some reason...can't even do it bit by bit.

it seems to empty the clipboard automatically- with out so much as a notice given...

Export as a PSD from illustrator and create the PNG In PS?

corrupts it i'm afraid.

it just ain't working photoshop side.
ok instead. basically- i just need to be able to get the image size pixel perfect on illustrator. any manipulation in photoshop seems to weird up the transparency
(the offending article is the landscape at the bottom of my frontpage which is currently a rather ugly 2 colour gif.)

can you send me the illy doc (v10)?

here's a trick that works with images that are greyscale (they can be in a rgb or cmyk doc, they just can't have colors):
add 'new layer'
do command+option+~
(or control+alt+~ on windows)press the 'd' key
press option+delete
delete your original layer.
what was white is now transparent, gradients anti aliasing and all, in tact.
this also works if you only have a bitmap of a one-colored logo and you need to make it transparent. Only you need to desaturate it first (command+shift+u) and correct the black and white points (command+shift+l).
you can make the black/gray to be a tint of any color by selecting that color and hitting option+shift+backspace.
Oh, did i mention–Photoshop is my bitch.

truly it is.

Do you mind my asking what you did?
I've had similar issues with PNGs, but I have always resolved them by exporting out a doc with an alpha, making changes, and then exporting the PNG from there.

even more low tech i'm afraid- i imported the original gif into illustrator and traced it to the same pixel dimensions.
not advisable- but worked in the circumstances.
