here's a trick that works with images that are greyscale (they can be in a rgb or cmyk doc, they just can't have colors):

    add 'new layer'

    do command+option+~
    (or control+alt+~ on windows)

    press the 'd' key

    press option+delete

    delete your original layer.

what was white is now transparent, gradients anti aliasing and all, in tact.

this also works if you only have a bitmap of a one-colored logo and you need to make it transparent. Only you need to desaturate it first (command+shift+u) and correct the black and white points (command+shift+l).

you can make the black/gray to be a tint of any color by selecting that color and hitting option+shift+backspace.

Oh, did i mention–Photoshop is my bitch.
