i have a G5, I love it.
The reason i say screw the new G5 is they upped he low end price to 1999 and only put 256 Megs of Ram in and teh thing doesnt even come with an airport card or bluetooth... WTF ARE THEY TRYING TO PULL..
I love the products but they are starting to piss me off with all this nonsense of not putting in key features when you pay that much.
thats like buying a BMW and having them put a 4 cylander engine in it and throwing on some hubcaps on steel crap wheels

so true.
like airtunes requires the purchase of the freaking monster cable connector!
- Mimio0
It's a DUAL 1.8 G5 it's actually a GREAT DEAL, faster system bus and 8x Superdrive. I'm contemplating one.
- jon_0
airtunes doesn't need the monster cable, it just needs a minijack to phono cable for most hifi connections, or a minijack type optical connector to toslink connector.
the monster cable is just the only one that apple sells

they should cut the bullshit and build in a gig of ram
- kpl0
the low end is a dual. what's that, an extra $500 for the processor alone?
airport - 99
256mb more ram - 99
bluetooth - 40So, to add it all back you spend $238 or so. Price went up by $200 so that's about $438.
whats the big deal here?
- Mimio0
The big deal is people can't read carefully.

i hate the G5....i was seriously looking at a 15" PB untill this morning. Cluefuct on what to do now all thanks to Apple.

I think desktops are shit. i have a G4 dual 1GHZ tower and it's really fast. But what the hell, can't they just cram it all into pb's already and cut out these huge monsters? They are so 90's.
- kpl0
"I think it's important ... not to expect a G5 anytime soon in a PowerBook -- certainly not before the end of the year" (via Macworld)
so, Soler, nope!
- tymeframe0
is this article right? i thought the previous g5 line was dual processors...?
- gabriel_pc0
"Although it had been offering dual processors in its midrange and high-end G5 desktops, Apple on Wednesday began offering that feature on all of its Power Mac G5 desktops."
- tymeframe0
accross the line i mean......anyway, i'm prolly smoking good crack....as you were
- kerus0
they are huge monsters.. but also quiet, cool, efficient monsters........

so let me get this right. they cut the 1.8 and 2.0 dual price by $500Us, removed 256 megs from the 1.8, and you are bitching? most online retailers will give you free ram with purchase (i got a free gig with my 1.8, total 1.5). pro machines NEVER came with airport cards built in as far as i know, or blue tooth. these are all optional, since most desktop machines are hardwired to some kind of network, unlike laptops.

My point is.. if I am going to spend 2 grand on machine and only get 256 of ram with today computing needs.. thats a raw deal. And If I am going to spend 2grand and up on a machine like that and it doesnt even include bluetooth...farking cell phones have it built in.. wtf is wrong with them.
yes I know you can spend another few hundred dollars to upgrade.. thats not the point.. the point is... you pay a premium for an apple and its technology and they cant even bring the basics to the ball park.

I have a Dual G5 at work and 17in powerbook at home.the G5 is AMAZINGLY fast and powerfull. But I love having my powerbook.
If you dont do very high end stuff with your machine.. get the powerbook..
If you do.. get the G5...Either or.. you can resell the thing in a year and upgrade to the G5 Powerbook with it comes out.
- Mimio0
Qburt,
you just paid $2200 for a 3 year old chip in a shiney aluminum case.
- Donvitoviti0
?????
- Mimio0
You have a powerbook right? well... is it not usually sold at a premium? considering it's only 1.25 ghrz. I have one too and I feel like I got burned. I thought I'd never buy another Apple until I saw this new dual 1.8 for $2000. It actually seems like a value.

That's why I purchased a 1Ghz Tibook 1.5 years ago. You have to time your purchases to get the maximum benefit. I ended up saving $400, getting it loaded with free shipping and at 6mos. no int/no payment. The bumps to the powerbook line over this time haven't put me in the dust by much.
Now about the G5... we're just getting the spring update late. Problems at IBM's fab (shrinking G5's from 130nm to 90nm) are the culprit. Now the fabs are back to where they should have been by now. The next update (Rev. C) will be much better. Other tech such as PCI Express and possibly the IBM 975 will make this machine a HUGE leap rather than a spec bump.
