e-wo, how are they conservative?
- e-wo0
they are conservative in their political ideology outside of those specific economic side-effects.
conservative is not necessarily fiscal conservation. i'm niether supporting nor condemning the deficit these men were involved with.
- mrdobolina0
what would be some examples of their conservative political idealogy?
- Mimio0
It's certainly not Federal head count. Cheney has 25 assistants and advisors where Gore had only 6.

Reagan wanted to cut back govermnet size, cut back entitlements, and pursue socially and culturally conservative goals.
Well, he wound up occupied by a great many other things, and didn't really accomplish those things.
- mrdobolina0
and he was a great leader, why?
- GreedoLives0
they're both against abortion, for more states' rights, pro-armed forces/military spending, pro agressive foreign policy (as it is), etc.
all conservative issues.
the thing that's changed over the years though, is that conservatives always used to moan about the democrats' big government and how it was a waste of money...if you look at some of the recent democratic presidents (except maybe johnson), they've all been better at keeping their financial house in order than the republicans.
- e-wo0
That he didn't accomplish his ideals shouldn't be his lasting impression.
That he tried earnestly, and made mistakes, would be a better way to view it.
I could see how someone would question Reagan's ideology.
- GreedoLives0
e-wo, if you judge by that, then Bush Sr was a great presidents, because he didn't accomplish dick, even though he may have been earnest about it.

I'd say conservatism is based on a more traditional view of things. Family values...faith..etc.
Something interesting to consider....Nacey Reagan has been a big proponant of stem-cell research since Ronald was diagnosed with it. But many conservatives are against it....and alot of that has to do with the whole right to life thing.

I kind of wish Gore did have that many. They may have been able to help him not become the most boring human on the planet. Maybe 4 or 5 jesters, 3 or 4 speech therapists.

anything faith-based can't be proven and thus, is completely subjective.

A great leader?
Character and humility.
I greatly respect his befriending of Gorbachev. I know the Soviet Union was nearing its end, but Reagan took on a very responsible role in its dismantling.
I cite my generation's existence as a reason to be thankful for the friendship of those two men.

It's ironic that the Reagan family pleaded for Dubya to allow for federal funding of stem cell research, since uncle Ronnie spent his entire presidency slashing federal programs for the poor...
ain't life a beeyotch?

xaos, that opens a big Q on the role of ideology and experience and the implications of experience thereof. I always consider that in relation to the capacity of a wealthy elite to rule and legislate equitably.
* continue as you were, sidetrack ends here

yeah there is a lot of character in trying to classify ketchup packets as a vegetable in the school lunch program.
- e-wo0
good point, mrdob
i acknowledge that he had some definite issues in his domestic policy

Or ignoring an epidemic that killed thousands.
