ok, so over the past year I have really developed a love for design, I'm a network engineer by day, and i read, browse, look, and practice design at night..
Obviously I am not going to leave my job to go to school for design now...
But can anyone give me any pointers as in books/websites to read to learn more on my own?

+plus any books written by Steve Heller (The Looking Closer series - theory over practice). Rather than teach you how to design he's pretty good at teaching you to how to think about design.

I'm not sure which mediums you are most interested in but here are some good books to get started with:
Kees Dorst - Understanding Design (Covers a lot of ground in easily digestable chapters)
Carter Meggs - Typographic Design: Form and Communication (The basics of working with type and composition)
Carter Meggs - A History of Design (Great Reference)
Sturken - Practices of Looking (Semiotics)
Don Norman - The Design of Everyday Things (Interface Theory and a generally simple and great primer on "function")
Hope that helps!
