    I'm not sure which mediums you are most interested in but here are some good books to get started with:

    Kees Dorst - Understanding Design (Covers a lot of ground in easily digestable chapters)

    Carter Meggs - Typographic Design: Form and Communication (The basics of working with type and composition)

    Carter Meggs - A History of Design (Great Reference)

    Sturken - Practices of Looking (Semiotics)

    Don Norman - The Design of Everyday Things (Interface Theory and a generally simple and great primer on "function")
