I'm thinking about buying a G5. Are the first gen machines solid and bug free? I need to know before I drop the dough.
Thanks

hold off if you can...many signs point to a 3ghz model shipping by fall..to be announced at WWDC late June!

Dual 2ghz G5 bought in March - 2 new processors, new logic board and it's going back on Saturday for a new RAM board.
Hope they're not all this unreliable or Apple are really in the shit.

I'd like to hold off... Don't know if I can wait that long. My current machine is holding me back.

that's bs. i hear they are going to skip the 3ghz and come out with a new mac g62.
it's the size of a geo and has an internal coffee machine, patented "geek gamer app" and can compute... and i quote from steve himself "um... shitloads" of info per nanosecond.
just wait.

i heard it will come with a USB shaver because the price you'll pay for the mac you won't be able to pay rent on your house so you'll need to shave at your desk

I have a G5 dual 2 ghz and I have all kinds of problems with it. I receive at least 1 kernel panic a day, usually before I had the chance to save what I was doing.
Other things are a little buggy, IE always crashes, I mainly use Safari now, that seems to be ok. All in all, I feel that these new g5's are alot more tempermental than their predecessors. My g3 has never had a kernel panic.

and i heard that if you wait till jan 05 there will be quad processor versions. This is the endless debate of wait or buy now. I have a dual 1.8 with 2.5 G RAM and it flies and is plenty sufficient. Yes you could wait, but why? i suggest to buy a refurbished one, cheaper from apple website.

i'd wait a little. fan problems are still rife. http://g5support.com/group/viewf…

I have a dual 1.8 G5 at work. It's pretty awesome (if you don't include teh last security update that apple sent out).
it's a helluva lot better than my dual xeon BOXX peecee at work, which is a $4,000 piece of crap.
My coworkers have one too. We have a bluescreen competition goin' on...

I've heard a bit about the fan probs. Is this something that affects a limited number of them... or all?

1.6Ghz single proc here at work.
Works great.
the loudest thing is the harddrive.I'd wait until after the WWDC.
Apple is long overdue for an update. You wouldn't wanna miss out on Dual 2.6Ghz with a 1.3 Ghz bus or a ridiculously powerful new video card.
Or maybe an extra drive slot!
Plus, 2nd generation machines are always better.as for cost - this has been argued a bajillion times
Macs last longer, they have a MUCH higher resale value and you will spend far less time updating and fixing things than you would on Windows. It's a one time investment.
