How would you explain design (in general) to 8th graders? Stuff like what makes things cool & uncool, and in terms they get, fashion, clothes, etc. I've got to give a presentation to a bunch of them on Tuesday, and I'm stuck.

I got as far as first year university computer science beforeI found out that industrial design even existed (!), so for a start I'd make sure they understand what design is as distinct from things they already have heard of: artists, architects, engineers... i.e. the bigger picture, before diving into specific fields of design 3D, 2D, print/web/interactive...

Part of the research at a recent Royal College of Art Vehicle Design project presentation included a huge collection of kids drawings of cars...it was one of the most insightful parts of the presentation...

whatever you do, dont tell them something is cool because it just is, i hate that shit.
rule no. 1: you must have a legitimate reason for its coolness, not just because.
you have terms such as balance, composition, theme, color, tone, direction, &c

Use examples, and get them to decide whether it's cool or uncool, then discuss why they think that and maybe even what they would change about it.
As for what examples to use, I've no idea, but maybe get a couple of fashion mags, like Cosmo, etc... and leaf thru them and see what you like and don't like. Or something.
Cool is in the eye of the beholder anyways... like most things.

you're only doing them harm to ask if things are 'cool or uncool'. gawd.

Good point, well, maybe the show the class what WAS cool in recent years/decades, how trends tend to cycle, and how much more fad-ish things are these days is something to discuss?
