I'm trying to achieve a pretty complicated parallax effect in Flash, like this one on the Belleville Triplets/Rendezvous website
http://www.sonyclassics.com/trip…
Just like that only with more like 25/26 layers parallaxing than the 4/5 they use. It looks good in my head with the setup i got, only i dont know shit about getting the effect done. Anyone got any links to similar website i can go around looking at? Especially ones with lots and lots of layers all scrolling in a parallax type way. Sample fla's i can download and figure the principles of wud be much appreciated too. What wud be even more appreciated if someone had any hints/tips on whether there's certain rules u have to follow to make it look convincing - if there's any studies/guides/principles on the parallax effect in general i can be looking at. Any help?
cheers me dears.

the best way is to make the 3 planes.
The closest to the user will be bigger, and so on.
You then should make loop function that will move each one either accordingly to _xmouse/stage.width or a targeted _x [or both].

note: differents slide speeds are reuqired for the paralax 'illusion'.
so a speed parameter is advisable within the slide funcion.

Is it stupid to go for 20 planes? Would i be better using Director for something like that?
- unfittoprint0
sorry, I was just using the 3 planes as an example...
Remeber: the more u have, the more processor usage will be required.

Yeah that's what i was thinking. I've never really used Director but i was wondering if it would be easier to achieve in Director with z-orders and that. It's meant for a cd-rom i'm doing - so i was wondering if it was worth the hassle in Flash or i shud go pseudo-3D in Director. And i've never used director. Kinda daunting....

If it's only pseudo [altough baisc 3d is possible within flash, using trignommery equations] I think you should use Flash. Lighter, AS is more easier to grasp than Lingo [altough the first can no be used within Director].
good luck.

ok. cheers for your advice unfit!

Kuz,
Also save yourself a ton of hassle, use Freehand. We illustratred in AI only later to find that heavy flash animations run much better from Freehand. We did the same sort of effect with http://www.infusionproject.com
Originally we were planning on having about 12 slides moving at the same time...as you can see we ended up with 4. Anything more than that and a 1 Ghz CPU (including all Apple PB's) will bog down and all your animations will run choppier than shit. Believe me we tried just about EVERYTHING.
Keep your illustrations really simple, thats one thing that killed us. See http://www.aiwa.com they have quite a few objects moving at the same time, but they are all really simple shapes.
hope this helps. Cheers

Thanks iDP. It's becoming clear that getting close to 20planes makes it a bit unworkable so i've managed to reduce everything to discrete chunks. But i can't get away with simplifying the shapes. It's pretty involved cos i'm taking paintings from the Mughal period in India and trying to illustrate how they used techniques of layering to illustrate complex narrative. So basically i'm working with the original JPEGs and sperating off the layers. What's it like trying to achieve this with JPEGS or GIFs or something like that?
- iDp0
well that might actually work better...our dilema was that we needed our illustrations to also xScale and yScale, and our illustrations had tons of vector data, where you could just move jpegs across a completely linear plane. If it still slows things down a lot then you might want to look at loading in Jpegs as the timeline advances. But I honestly think you'll be fine by just moving jpegs horizontally.

Yeah what i actually wanna do is just shift the POV across a linear plane to show people how the paintaings layers are arranged in 3D space. I dont need to do anything that's on ur site with the zooms and that. Still i think it might get processor intensive cos i wanna put about 3/4 paintings side by side that merge into each other and the planes intermingling. Anyway it's becoming much clearer now i've actually arranged everything on the stage and applying some AS.

cool, lemme know when you get it done, I'd love to see what you are talking about.

yeah yeah, i'll post it up. I'm learning a lot of the painting techniques of different non-European cultures. It's quite interesting - reminds me of what Picasso and some of the Cubists were referencing in their work.
