so i am working on a 10' x 4' mural in illustrator...i resized an image in photoshop, to 10,000px wide...i go file, place in illustrator, and it takes a while to load the img...but when it pops in, it is only 1,800px wide...any ideas why...?

what's your res?
- ganon0
the img is 300dpi
- ganon0
check that, its 400dpi....
- swollenelbow0
why aren't you working in inches in photoshop as well? it shouldn't be a problem...
- ganon0
just used to referring to imgs by pixels...the unit shouldnt matter....
- swollenelbow0
i'm not getting dude...where is gorbie, or umm, let's see...who else knows about print...it's kind weird when working with huge images like that...i hate them.

Can't say exactly why it is happening but I can suggest that you place a lower-res image into Illy to work with. Create the illustrator portion of the deisng and then bring it into Photoshop on top of the hi-res image. Export as a TIF and you're all good.
Not the way you want to do it but it'll do the trick.

is the placed image a tiff or a jpg?
- ganon0
placed img is a tif...originally i tried to do the vectors in AI and export as a psd to then add imgs, but i crashed everytime...not enough RAM, and i have 1 gig....
- BonSeff0
is the placed image the same size as your artboard in illi?
- ganon0
in ps the tif is 400dpi, 25 x 17.5"...the art board size in illy is 120 x 48"....
- BonSeff0
try resaving the the tif as a jpg and place it again. just a suggestion.. not sure what's going on bro

can you link it rather than outright placing it? does that distort it, too?
how about copy & paste, or is the file too large for the clipboard?
- ganon0
thanks guys, the file is too big for the clipboard...is it better to resize the img in photoshop & then bring it in, or resize it in illustrator...or doesnt it matter...?
- ganon0
da da bump
is it better to resize the img in photoshop & then bring it in, or resize it in illustrator...or doesnt it matter?..by resizing the imgs in photoshop first(to 50-60"), its really blowing up my .ai file size....

if you're scaling it up in illustrator, you're really just lowering the resolution on the photoshop file. if you're trying to stay within set printing specs, you should resize in photoshop.
- ganon0
ok, thanks greedo

i personally would be working on a much smaller scale, like do all my illustration in illy at 10" X 4" and when it came time to print i would resize

Well that's fine and dandy when your working with vector data only, but wont work if you throw the tiff in the mix.
Unless. You meant you'd use a lower resolution version of the image just for the editing/composition and then switch to high res when you were done. But even in that case it wouldn't help any to keep the physical measurements lower than the final version. If that's what you meant :P
By the way: if you scale the tiff up a lot, it doesn't make that big of a difference whether (how the fck do you spell that word again?) you do it in PS or ILL. Either way, you're fucked. A lot of times you're much better off just using a lower resolution. That is, if you don't know how or don't have the time to retouch the image after you've resized it. And maybe even in that case.
