Sorry if this is a rebroadcast, don't think my first one got up here.
Anyway, If I'm at $45k in upstate NY, what could I expect to make near Ventura, CA?
I really want to move there, but the rent for some apartments near the ocean is like $1200/month for 700sq. ft 1 bedroom.
Is it all relative?

Maybe I'll just go the clearwater, FL where it's just as nice and half the price for ocean front apartments.

rent and property values have skyrocketed in the last 3 years here in los angeles (i am not sure about ventura). the problem is that employers have failed to keep up with housing prices. when i moved here from nyc 5 years ago, the average 1 bedroom was $600, now it $900-$1000. the average entry level position (general) is about $9-$11 hour. i know, my girl has been looking for work the last month. i have a friend who works for a small design studio here in burbank and she makes $32,000 year. then you need a car if you dont have one. are you still paying? insurance? gas? food? by the time you finish with all your payments, your broke. where upstate ny are you? i grew up in rochester.

While not perfect, this will give you a good idea:

The cost of living in CA is substantially higher than upstate NY - especially if you're away from one of the bigger cities (ie: Albany, Buffalo, etc...)
Think about Manhattan rates only slightly lower.

Near Albany, NY. Not a nice place unless you have family here.
For Ventura, the calculator says I need $51k to live in the same condition.
Maybe I'll go to some tourist island and sell beads for $400 and month.

Ah, I lived near Plattsburgh If you've any idea where that is. If you do, congratulations, you're in small company.

You should check the AIGA. They have salary information on their site.

Would money be your only reason to move from NY to California? How much is the sun, surf and Cali lifestyle worth to you?

california rocks. southern california at least. if you enjoy good weather, then california is where it's at. and if you love traffic, LA is definately where it's at. if you can find a job, you might be paid more. although competition is fierce here, and they can get somebody just as good as anybody else for $32,000. people are struggling here. design students are becoming waitreses. acting students are becoming porn stars. maybe people should go to cooking school so if they get a job at mcdonalds they won't feel like they wasted their school years...
