I'm learning after effects and I want to use a effect like this:

I'd like to know how to get the horizontal distortion.
Do I have to do something with a mask or something?
I took this part out of the reel of http://www.motion.ee they do some prety good stuff btw! (

any tips to start with?

hmmm, to start with. Well i'm no AE pro... but if i were gonna do it, i'd end up doing it the hard way. Some keyframes, scaling, tints, horizontal/vertical animation.

Yes, but when I have a lot of different layers and I want them all to move like that... how can I do that?
What happends is that the complete composition moves up and got replaced by a similar image.. hmm... that's not the best way to explain it I guess...

my english is pretty bad sometimes ;-)

It looks like they are using the mirror effect as well but if you want to move the clip horizontal/vertical just key frame it and line up a duplicate just under it/beside it. Use the parent option in the time line to link it together. boom!

nested compositions?

thanx, I'm going to play with it a little...

you can also use adjustment layers to effect everything underneath them.

That right there would be an Adjustment Layer with a Displacement Map on it.
The Displacement Map can be found in the "Distort" category.

That's a filter. Try DigiEffects Video Malfunction. Sorry, I don't know if it's that one, but I know there's a filter that does that effect.

thanx, I'm going to try to find the plugin

Well, I'm pretty sure it's just an animated Displacement Map. Did you try it?
- Xentic0
yes, I tried it. A displacement map works great.

Do you think this looks like the effect?

Oh, and don't care about the rest, I'm just trying some stuff in AE ;-)
