hi, im lucky enough to be getting some inheritence, and as im only young once thinking of setting up a summer project, already put it in action actually - I was planning on getting a decent static (ip) web connection and putting to use all my old PC's gonna buy a couple of terabytes hd (i.e. enough 160GB drives) and some mini-itx boards and setting up a free web space site like angelfire or geocities with no adds at all - crazy and stupid i know
revenue model.
free 10mb webspace, www.thewebsitesdomainhere.com/us…... **no ads on user site only adverts on admin page - used to add pages and folders to their websites**if i did charge it would be changing ur web addr to ur domain i.e. www.thewebsitesdomainhere.com/us…... to www.ur-domain.de (plus email a/c)etc and that would be something like $/£10 per year
ur feedback or ideas would would be helpful :)

i was thinking of offering different domains as well - i.e. www.domain1.com/youruser-name,
geekydomain2000.com/youruser-nam... or
whatever-domain.com/youruser-nam... etc

sounds a bit halfbaked so far.
make sure if becomes profitable for you (check ALL the expenses you'll make (incl. insurance etc!!)) before you go with it.
it would be a shame to waste all that money on something that disappoints you later on.

totally agree - it is half-baked trying to find out the connection directly from BT - which seems to be taking forever
but i what kinda want is ideas or problems with the idea guys? :) pretty plz :P

I would suggest hiring a good copy writer so that you don't attract a huge group of the stereotypical Geocities/Angelfire user. It's just a thought. Market the product well.
There are still free hosting sites out there that have no ads. Quite a few of them. So it's not quite as crazy as you want it to be.
Also take into consideration the amount of bandwidth that you'll be using, especially if you allow remote image loading. That seems to be what lots of people who search for free hosting are into these days. Bandwidth alone will be enough to drain you.
I think you're under the impression that you'll be using your inheritance to do something positive for the internet world, but you're basically shelling out money that you could use for something actually beneficial rather than hosting some kids who are capable of closing out a couple of pop-up windows occasionally.

if you want to make money from your money, buy some bonds or invest in mutual funds...hell, even a bank with a good interest yeild.
If you want to start a business, there are more profitable and respectable choices.
If you just want to be a geocities rip and don't care about the money, go for it.

thanks jrust nice input and fate i already have bonds and properties - the idea for a geocities rip is to assist other projects i am attempting to start in the future, its a good start to getting into premium hosting etc
good point on the bandwidth - thats the problem im having securing

don't just create a geocities type of thing as it's really a waste. domains are cheap enough and to be honest good hosting is also really cheap these days that the free thing is off putting

no people thanks for the input even the bad was good cos it helpful - im just planning to get large bandwidth connection and just thinking of giving away the redundant bandwidth - it would assist the main project with getting it heard and into the market place - thanks

yikes.... at least set up a webhosting company or something.. free never got anyone anywhere... also huge pipes run at 1.2 k a month. can you reall afford to throw your money away like that? you won't see a return on your investment for a few years at least.. also do you know how to run a server/email/ all the back end stuff that a good high end server requires to keep it running smoothe? you gotta know what you're doing.. come fund my business... i'll make you money.. lol.
