I just did a temp job at a place where a much better action script guy than me told me to always use movie clips instead of buttons in MX 2004 Pro. Now, I'm taking his advice, but I'm getting some weird results.
Anyone care to share their experiences with movie clips vs buttons?

Joshua Davis told me to use movie clips instead of buttons and I did. I am a happier man because of this.

I guess I'm still having the same old Action Script problems then. I think I'll have to get a good book and dedicate myself to it because I'm still so bad after all these years. How depressing.

I prefer using MC's as buttons, you can have so much more control. And onClip events are also deprecated use Object Oriented approach [onLoad, onRelease, onRolOver, etc...].
The code becomes, step by step, more centralized in one action layer, where errors are much easier to trace, and change made much, much faster.
