Steffmann's personal site is great too. Check out his high-res scans of heraldry of the graphic arts industry.

"but in Germany - Die Land of Standards?"
Hmm. Are you suggesting they used a stencil?
- Gorbie0
no, what i was trying to imply is that i would have figured that the signage for the u-bahn stations was very uniform, and probably based on a prior design.
but that's just my perception of germans and their previously mentioned standardization obsessions

do you notice the different size and weight in the letters 'e' and 'n'

very interesting Typographica..
what unfittoprint is for flash questions, is Typographica for type related matter!
i'd love to suck many more links out of you.. :P
one question:
have you ever heard about:
'Helvetica Flair' ?
i found this in this old book i bought, called
'Duplicata. L'imprimerie, une profession, un art.'
i am curious to find out who made this fancy Helvetica adapt..

Thanks for the kindness, DB.
I haven't heard of Helv Flair, but I'm not surprised to hear it once existed. One of the many times someone was looking for Bookman Swash on the Typophile ID Board, the great letterer and type designer Mark Simonson came up with this beast:

that under den linden type is hard to track down. the one that tg pointed out looks very similar but the L is odd though. but it is also a type of typeface used in bookprinting a lot long time ago. pre digital era that is. so there is a chance it does excist digitally if someone took the effort to recreate it. i do agree with tg, it's handpainted but they prolly worked with templates to create unity. the berlin subway system is over 100 years old you know so it had to be done manually. and some signpainters are really good. it's a profession you know. anyways, i mailed a couple of people who might know. if i hear something i'll let you guys know.
