This is so totally after-the-fact: Forgot to mention the $50 rebate, which is why I chose Western Digital over other brands available for comprable price...and why I bagged the firewire.

get the external drive case and get a 160GB hard drive from CompUSA, they have one for $60 after rebates. it's a $100 worth of rebates though. http://www.compusa.com/products/…

is there a big speed difference between internal harddrives and external harddrives using fw 800?

do not get a iomega.
i got one and returned it cause whenever my computer was on (even if i was not using the drive) the fan would be on, and it annoyed the crap out of me.

would a regular hard drive with a usb/firewire drive enclosure be ok to put in my back pack and not worry about it getting fucked up?
