unfortunately it doesn't work that way. the economic situation is as such and some people are happy for even having a job. for every waiter/waitress there are 10 waiting in line in case he/she gets fired for demanding a raise. it sucks i know but that is the situation. how would you feel if you do your best for a customer while working for a minimum wage and not getting a tip?

yeah I know, thats like I said, if people give me a good servicing then I'll slip them a tip, but if they spill their juice on me or if the dish tastes a little too prawny then I'll just leave them the wad they deserve and no extra.

They don't tip in Italy. By the way, they excellent professional service there.

Haaaaaaaaaaaa, VERY FUNNY question! I don't donate jack shit, because I've worked with Non-Profs and NGO's before, they are all money grubbing f*cking bastards. Most, and I mean most of those origanisations take 90% for administrative costs and leave the 10% for their cause. it's a freakin' jokie joke! And even then that 10% doesn't always go to the right place as their are a lot of middlemen and contractors along the way. Sort of like IRAQ.

i evaluate my taxes before the end of the year, then whatever i think i will have to pay to the gov't, i donate to the art or natural history museum.

yeah, dob got the idea, if you're gonna' give it away, give it to some bum or homeless type dude so he can go and buy a cheeseburger and a beer, it'll make him happy and he'll never bonk you on the head when your coming out of a bar. Other than that, don't even give your old clothes to Goodwill, as they profit from it too. Give it to someone you know or to a church. :)

Been there, done it. Never bothered me. To expect me to tip is rude.I do it though. Mainly because the G/F gives me hard time. But sometimes if the service is great I'll do so.
Some waiter telling me the wine is "french" to back up his recommendation in London doesn't cut it though.

damn my double entendres were lost on people :(

I hate tipping in London cause it seems like another american import..and you end up getting pissed off with it..everyone is at you trying to wheedle every last penny out of you. Even at starbucks they have a 'tipping' jar...what a crock of shit

ohh shit moth, that doesn't fly. I would be like whateva, I ain't givin' you shit brutha' ;)

come in, I've spent enough time in the EU to know generally that tiping is all part of the main check. I mean shit even in NYC the Greek joints don't really expect too much of a tip. Those guys are paid off the total take. I'm I wrong here?

reminds me of the opening scene from reservoir dogs. guess the mr.'s in this thread.
anyways, yeah starbucks tipping is not called for. that's getting too much out of hand. and if it sucks don't tip.
yeah everyone in europe knows no one tips in italy. especially the waiters / waitresses who are not living in italy and whose income depends on tips. and when in rome do as the romans do right? counts for everyone except the italians. that's why it is rome prolly.
btw the service isn't all that in italy allthough you suggest differently.
anyways, everyone does what they want to do.

Rabattski, You should see how bad the general service is in America. Typically it's a twenty-something loser who doesn't know their ass from their elbow and never gets your order 100% correct. Also, to suggest that these people are under paid is ridiculous, a busy bar or restuarant a waiter/waitress can take home $150 -$250 per night tax free.

not much, a few hundred per year in total.. homeless/disaster relief/natural preservation is teh usual target for my donations..

tipping may be a form of corruption to you, and maybe technically it is, but is it a harmfull corruption?
If a client does not bitch at all about an offer and pays fast and without whining i am very prepared to throw in a little extra work, or more attention to detail.
it's a capitalist world, if you do well, you deserve an extra, simple as that.
I do tip quite a lot of people, but only those who alsways help with a genuine smile on their face..
but then i live in a small town and i get along very very well with most people so i think it's different in the anonymous big city.
