an ex of mine worked at a major chain video store, and the policy was if the customer made any complaint or raised any type of stink they would erase their late charges.

Hmmm well I worked for Blockbuster for 3 years when I was in High School. We were assholes. Rarely would we erase late charges...but sometimes if you were a dick we'd offer to half it so you'd shut the hell up. Oh and if you signed up using a credit card...they'll charge you the late fees PLUS the cost of the movie, which is normally around $120. How's that for ya?
I always got a funny little smile knowing I'd make someone's day by putting 80 dollars in late fees on their Visa and hoped that I wouldn't be workin the day they got their bill and raged on the first employee in sight. Hah

Hahhahah.... no..I was just a guy who worked there...following orders...just like any shit teenage job. It was especially funny when I knew the people.......hahahha..teachers, neighbours, that guy who works at KFC.....

Don't return it to another store!
Here's what you do... take it the the store you got it from and put it on the shelf. Don't put it in the slot...and don't give it to an employee. When they call...tell them that you returned it ages ago. Stores do inventory every couple of months and it will turn up then. They'll be like......oh.....here it is...on the shelf all along....and some lackey will get a slap for not scanning it in properly. Haha.......

Yep, unless the exit and entrance are the same doorway.
You can always do the walkthrough whilst someone else is walking out... when it beeps they will stop the person going out instead of the person coming in.
