I want to get into some miniDV stuff. I'm new to 'motion' and just know some premere and after effects as a hobby.
I'd love to get the canon gl2, but $2K is a little steep for moi.
The Canon Optura xi looks like a good deal at about $1,000.
Any advice?

do a search at sites that list the quality of low budget DVs would be my advice. http://www.google.com/search?hl=…

Good idea JazX. I hate to buy crap. But I can't afford quality! Plus it's just a fun hobby I wanna get into.
Anyone out there with low end miniDVs?

I have had the canon optura 200MC for a while now and love it. I'm just a video hobbiest too.
Family stuff, surfing and snowboarding.
It's nice and small and easy to use. no problems. The image stability is great. I bought a wide angle lens adapter and bigger battery, and I'm happy.

Go with Sony's MicroMV...
"MICROMV format is Sony's new line of really small digital camcorders. And when we say REALLY small, we mean it. A MICROMV digital camcorder typically measures about 4"H x 2"W x 3"D and uses tapes drastically smaller than MiniDV tapes. Each tape boasts a 64KB memory chip that touts 16 times the amount of storage than that of a premium MiniDV cassette! And the video quality recorded in MPEG-2 format is amazing."
