Eli,
Thanks for response. There is a great deal of meaning in design and the creative community is indispensible for the future. To the point that people expect it! Remember the out spoken concerns of, "Why don't we have flying cars like they promised," in the year 2000?

i though that this was specifically about creativity regarding design and art not creativity in e.g. science, phylosophy etc. that's a whole different story. especially if you're saying stuff like this: "essentially two types of people, those who create and those who sit on there asses and watch".

Often designers aren't very high up in the chain of (corporate) political decision making so they become very cynical about politics in general and the value of design outside of surface/visual design. My definition of design is creative problem solving. And yes that includes close links to engineering and science.
If you start trading rhetoric in a public forum you will probably be labeled as a pretentious / naive fool. People are perhaps quicker to get wound up than they would be if you were having a discussion with them face to face.
Also the more that people have invested in the idea that they are powerless to change their world, the more they will try and make you feel that way too.
Personally I think design often works well as an iterative process. I think there should always be room for originality but not at the expense of finding the solution that works best.
And we all know that Google knows all - http://www.thebeginnersguidetogr…

Do you honestly think that, in the long run, good design has ever made the world a better place. I'm struggling to think of an example.
You gave the wheel as an example. Fair enough, good idea.
My point is, what happens when someone says:'lets put 16 of them together on 8 axles, run a big metal chain around them, and stick the biggest fuck off gun we can find on the top.'
I'd rather the guy who invented the wheel had been run down by a bus before he invented the wheel.
(see what I did there!)
