I feel PixelDrama's pain. I went through 5-6 different looks before getting to where I wanted to be. I think it's a very important part of the process though.
I try to take one word, and use that as my main concept. For my site, I kept thinking about the word 'clever' when designing. This way, when you get down the line, you have some basis for judgement if you are staying on course.

i chose to show some skills that I wasnt able to flex at previous jobs (back in 2001)
I also thought a conservative but appealing design would be more timeless for my purposes - a foum to display work and promote skils - and find a job with.
It worked, got a great job and have been to busy to touch it since.

totally agree with brooke saying its harder to design for urselve then a client - the requirements are much different - my design is taking ages for my own personal site - looks like it will rock through been getting all different ideas and inspiration -- gekkokig.org.uk - where greed is good! :) one day i it will go live :P
