Useit is a fine site, easy to find what your looking for without the hassel of loading or chunky graphics. In my opinion he is smart because he markets himself well AND knows alot about usablity. Sure, he might not appeal to you guys, but his usability tips are smart when your dealing with the ordinary non-tech scay browser.

I have a problem with assuming that my audience is the lowest common denominator. Stupidity knows no depth.

Google should put the search box as the first thing you see on their site, then categories. I find Nielsen's site (I mean, 2000 links to amazon.com) cumbersome to navigate through, but I do like sites that are easy, simple and fast to understand.

If all designers have to follow Jakob Nielsen's usability rules, then all of the other arts should have their own "safety police." It's best to follow their example because it's what people are used to.
For example:
All saxaphonists should sound like Kenny G.
All singers should sound like Celine Dion.
All talk show hosts should follow Jay Leno's example.
All actors would act like Tom Hanks.
All pianists would sound like John Tesh.I understand that there are some guidlines to follow, but if Jakob had his way, the web would be nothing more than a phone book. Try new things, make mistakes, screw the experts.
