I know, I know, I have searched already with no luck. I am trying to view avi's in quicktime 6.5, no images, just sound. I am also trying to view .asf's with wmp 9 but it re-directs me to a web page asking me to get an update/get plugins.
Any help much appreciated. (I've also tried opening avi's in AE, Premier, imovie, safari, netscape, explorer, still no luck...)

regarding those avi's. that's a codec issue. try downloading the latest divx codec (i think it's version 5.1.1) at http://www.divx.com/. the codec self is free. it is still very possible that you cannot play them (either no sound or no video) check if you have all the indeo's codec's installed as well. the latest version is indeo 5. there is still no indeo 6 (which most avi's need) you have to wait till apple have made that. if that's going to happen anyways.

no prob. dunno if you're on classic or osx. if on osx there's this player called mplayer (i think) which plays anything. i assume you're on classic though. not sure. because on osx there seems to be less issues with asf's and avi's. anyways, those indeo codecs can be downloaded at apple in case you don't have 'em.

there's something on http://www.versiontracker.com
that you can get to view avi's on a mac. just do a avi search.

there are two at versiontracker. if you read the comments you can only conclude that they don't work. but you still can try. anyways it really is a codec issue. trust me. oh but i saw that you can download the indeo 5 codec there. which is handy.

I'm on Osx. I have just downloaded the indeo codec from apple and version tracker but fear it is for earlier macs (g3) running quicktime 3/4. I also downloaded the divX pro trial v5.1.1 so am off to restart to see if anything's changed. cheers again...

I tried downloading the Divx codec, the Videolan app and I still can't get an avi to play the video track. I'm on OSX 10.3.3

I'm on 10.2.8 and my after re-starting my mac, quicktime now plays .avi files, woohoo. Also, the VLC media player thing plays them too.
thanks folks.
