I've been a Mac user for 7 years now but financial constraints are forcing me to look into a more cost effective machine. My question is if I'm to go w/ a Windows machine which manufacturer is the best for support and upgradibility?
Thanks in advance.

Have you considered refurb or secondhand Macs?
The financial viability of a PC may be thrown out of the window if you need to replace all your software...

true. and if you possibly can, stay with apple.

Build-It Yourself!
That's the only way I would ever own a Windows PC.

I thought about building it but am ignorant in this arena. Any good resources for building a PC for novices.

Online builder, can't go wrong as it works out what parts you need.
built 4 pc's from there with no problems

what kind of machine u're looking for ? what budget ? $$ ?
genral guidelines :take a nice P4 no less than 3.0 Ghz, 1 gig of PC3200 Corsair Value, 1 or 2 Sata 8 mb cache HD, a 'nice' (mac users no comment plz..) box like antex with proper cooling etc..
motherboard go for Asus , Msi or Abit.. i recommend Asus with i875 including everything : usb, ethernet, firewire etc..
video card : that's where u spend ur cash : nvidia or radeon, ur choice.. i'm an nvidia fanatic : go for a 5900, well enough for graphics, games and all the fun u'll never get on a mac...if you must go heaper , still get some nice RAM, a 5900 video card and a SATA hard drive.. and buy cheaper components : cdrw or , case, motherboard.. (also i won't recommend taking anything below i865
good luck

That setup should do it!

Yeh, I agree, build one yourself. Not only will you save money, you will learn about your box in the process. Remember, PC's are designed to be assembled by bods like u n me. Plenty good magazines out there with guides for PC building noobz. BTW, I use a PC at home but Mac in the office - and my 1GHz PC performs bout the same as my 333MHz G3, so go figure...

u'll be fine with a little reading and forum posting..
for the first setup maybe ask a friend or someone to give u hand to place the proc, the cooler, the motherboard.. it's always a nice learn to see it done under ur eyes..

Thanks for advice! Especially the post which lays out exactly what to buy.
MU...what are the specs on your 1ghz PC is that P4? Does the g3 really compete w/ it?

you could always buy a barebones that already has the motherboard and power source installed. takes alot of the guesswork out.

I just upgraded it, but before the upgrade it was:
1Ghz Athlon (AMD) Tbird
384MB PC133 RAM
40 GB 5400 RPM hard drive
Win XP proIn Photoshop it is pretty comparable to my G3.
333MHz G3
384 MB PC 133 RAM
6GB hard drive
OS 9.0Just upgraded to a 2.3GHz Athlon 3000 (barton) so I'll letch you know how that runs if you like.
BTW, if you want to know how fast a computer really is, speaking as someone who has benchmarked many machines, I think that opening a large file in photoshop is the single best indicator of how 'fast' it is. Hope this helps.
Cheers
