I think I'm guilty of using just about everything that you people mentioned at some point. Sometimes you get pressed for time and you know the client wants to see the overused elements. I swear every time I come up with something remotely original, my boss asks to see something more like what so ‘n’ so is doing. If I hear “more edgy,” I’m going to go crazy!

i dontw work in the design "business" but i think about how annoying words like 'wacky' , 'zany' or 'edgy' must be. they should call it

I love cliches. If they are used right. eurostile can be great or mean. skulls and dripping paint can be splendid or stupid. a blowjob each morning can be pleasure or pain.
it really depends.
I see trends coming and going, but most of them aren't nearly as overused or penetrant as they were a few years ago (yeah, those arrows, for example).
imho a design cliche becomes a cliche, when the concept and the message is missing.

Stylepimp, I totally agree with you.
When does something stop being a cliche and start being a classic?

Modernism is a movement dimmwit. Whats makes it cliche is idiots not understanding it and simply mimicing it. Same as Carson...he went beyond look, he pushed typography to another level, all teh copy cats just have no clue what lays behind it all, and therefore just look silly.
Cliche is when people use graphic elements without purpose or concept/idea. Dullwitted uneducated individuals who think design is making pretty pitures.

anybody who calls themselves eurotrash...well...

My apologies Eurotrash, while I wouldn't consider myself an obtuse individual, I am perhaps in this thread.

Anyone mentioned:
mono/duotone
vector tracing
fades
white flash just before pic loads
pointless cursors/targets
guns
skulls
iris/pupil/eyeball
men in business suits lookin' at graphs
le handshake
g w bushand dang the red white and black comment... those are my favourite colours hahahah IMHO it never goes out of fashion.
If colours were cliche then we ain't gonna have much to work on, innit?

I would like to append my statment. Modernism is not cliche, however, the style which came about as a result of modernism is cliche. The modernists had an agenda and a point to their work. It looke dhow it looked not because it was beautiful, but because it was in their eyes completly functional. All that remains is the style, but with none of the original substanance tha accompinied it.
