I'm not much of a business man, but I lost my full time job last week and I have my first freelance proposal to make.
This is the site I'm going to redesign:
http://www.gordon-silber.comImaging that the content will be the same as the original site + an archive of PDF newsletters which already exist. I also have to research and offer ways to make the site come up higher in search engine results. I'm researching that today.
One more feature we need is to set up a way to have the client update his own text content. I know there are different options for that. So any ideas are welcome.
Assume the client has hosting and domain name already.

Make sure you bill those dirty lawyers for every second you work, talk on the phone, etc.

...and I suppose I should bill them for the hours spent researching how to make his page list higher in search engine results?
I don't want to overcharge this guy because I'm going to do his wife's site next and I live in the same building as them.

There's a program called web postion gold which is great for page listing higher in search engines. It is a bit of money but you can use it towards others clients as well and charge them a small monthly fee to keep their page listing up there.

Just so you know getting a high page rank isn't a one time thing.
It takes lots and lots of constant attention to keep it up there.
Especially in a saturated market like law firms.

talk about a maintenance contract, that way he doesn't have to update, you can.
or
use macromedia contribute...dirty updating.

Thanks for the suggestions. I'm almost done with my proposal, which took me all day including the research. I didn't consider offering maintainence as an option, but I will.
