i'm doing the same thing at the moment. my partner and i have put £1000 in each and i got £1000 invested from someone else. we're doing our first recording in about 4 wks time. we're not bothering with 7s because of exactly what aurablue mentioned. i'll be stuck with them in my kitchen and they'll be a permanent reminder of my failure if they don't shift. so we're making 500 CDs and hoping to sell a lot more as mp3s. i've always hated the thought of selling and marketing but i've realised that if i'm going to make a business that i enjoy work and still feed my babies i'm going to have to bite the bullet. anyway, that's just me. i got a couple of books about promotion and marketing music but the best one i've read so far is this one;

good luck.

I used to work here...
when we started off, we made our money by doing silly discography's of famous bands! Ok to make money, but shit long term! We also used to sell rare and old Rock albums!

I still prefer vinyl cuz it just sounds better. Maybe I'm in a niche market... I dunno. I say release both. This site is a good reference:
The mechanic's guide is pretty good as a checklist. Just don't do what they did regarding copyright.

slightly unrelated, but could be a nice touch if you do, do promo cds

def. keep us posted.
i love the idea of you just putting out any type of music with soul

It's different in London than USA. It's quite possible to break even I think, and the 7 inchers serve as cool promo pieces. I've just finished designing a 7" for Felix da Housecat --- gonna come out in the UK in May. Working on a couple others now. It's a viable format, not to get rich, but to get things out there and break even.

Thanks for taking the time out to give the info / opinions - some real useful info there - I may be tapping some of you for more info in the near future...
I think there is some misunderstanding of what I'm doing - it's certainly not going to be a 'business' for 2 reasons:
1. I am cynical enough to realize that chance of me finding the next 'big thing' (or even the next 'small thing' for that matter) are sllim at most.
2. I don't need the grief
Dolan is spot on about London - I am pretty confident that I can shift 500 copies in London alone.
If you want to keep informed on release dates etc, drop me a line.
BTW I have just got back from watching Stereolab, they were absolute wizard. go see them boys and girls.

It's not about finding "the next big thing."
It's about getting anyone's music into people's hands with the outcome being that they hear it.
I'll be happy if you make 7" CD's-you'll get that popular 7" size and the technological prowess of a compact disc.

EMGEE33 - I know it's not about finding the next big thing - that's kind of what I was trying to say. I am just releasing music that makes me smile, that's the end of it...

I know what you're saying :)
I'm just want to know what you define it's success by.
