I don't really hate powerpoint, but it gets the job done quickly and works best if you have a boss who changes mind every other second.
Perhaps it helps to just think of it as a digital canvas much like the HTML.
It has it's limitations, but one can still make it look good.
When Macromedia gave a product launch for its MX series here, they answered all sorts of questions from the floor at the Q&A, but didn't answer this one:
"Why is your presentation in Powerpoint and not Breeze?"
