Excuse me, but I need to start a rant here. When are we going to start realizing the potential of the open source image manipulation program? The only reason GIMP can't compare to PS is becuase only programmers take interest in GIMP, so only programmers develop it, and they develop it as a clone of PS. If graphic designers got involved in the GIMP project, we could stop thinking of it as a free PS, but as a program to surpass PS. Get involved at: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/gi…
We can make better apps, we don't have to pay the rediculous licensing fees to Adobe and Macromedia.

I have seen some info on gimp and it does look a good program.
If they made it for mac I would give it ago.
Photoshop run like a bag of shit on OSX. And you need these day about 4000000000 MB ram too run anything. Great?

the gimp is available for your mac x box

For those of you who aren't aware, GIMP has scripting capabilities that are far more powerful than photoshop's actions. Its called script-fu. You can communicate with it using php to create dynamic images. Heres and example:

Apply an eye for design, and thats a very powerful use for GIMP. Script-fu is hard to learn, but there is help all over the net for it.

word upDog. the GIMP is getting there fast. It's still not as good as PS in alot of areas, even with the 2.0 pre-releases, but it's gonna get there prety damn soon.

I think so too, its pretty exciting. But like I said. The only way its gonna happen is if graphic designers, the people who are going to use the application, get involved in its development.

yep. that's why i posted my sexy screenshot :P

i use it regularly and am exclusively a designer. Other SW to look at is FilmGIMP and Wings3D.
Go Go OS! The only developers that really give a shit about U_sers.

this is a good idea. we all have some geek pals with pull in these open software circuits. we should collaborate.
one thing... has anyone figured out where to get mac gimp free? the mac gimp site claims it's available for free download but the link leads you to a pay for download screen.

It was free for a limited time. Now I think you have to pay a small fee.

i found it free on versiontracker. naturally it was a muddled tarball full of 67 individual files? this might be a stupid question but what the hell do you do with these files?

there is always installation notes in open source software. Open it up and it will tell you what to do.

is telling someone to rtfm the best way to gain product support?
- upDog0
haha good point mitsu. But, unfortunately at this point its all we can do for gimp. Not that we can't change that.
- mitsu0
to elaborate, i believe that developers involved in open-source projects, who wish to gain support in their initiatives should write their software with even the computer novice in mind.
- ldww0
is that screen shot what it looks like? what an ugly bulky interface, i would hate to use that
- upDog0
I agree with you completely mitsu. I think making it usable for novices is a good way to ensure its growth. I'll bring that up to the developers.

unfortunatley, many of the open source advocates i've met tend to be your typical left-brained programmer types with plush linux penguins atop their monitors. while i hate to generalize, it's rare to find someone in this category with an eye for aesthetics. the effect, of course, is a ton of powerfull software that is ungainly and counter-intuitive. the install manuals don't read like stereo instructions, usually, they are far worse. the results vary but are usually a heap of buttons and icons with no clear purpose backed by a very unwelcoming community that snaps and bites when 'newbs' ask 'simple' questions and then reminded that all answers are found in the tome they refer to as the user manual. the open source community needs to mature a bit more and lose it's elitist reputation if it wants to garner the attention of the lay computer user. while i usually don't make much effort to associate myself with the community, i do support their cause and hope that they get better recognition.
