unfortunatley, many of the open source advocates i've met tend to be your typical left-brained programmer types with plush linux penguins atop their monitors. while i hate to generalize, it's rare to find someone in this category with an eye for aesthetics. the effect, of course, is a ton of powerfull software that is ungainly and counter-intuitive. the install manuals don't read like stereo instructions, usually, they are far worse. the results vary but are usually a heap of buttons and icons with no clear purpose backed by a very unwelcoming community that snaps and bites when 'newbs' ask 'simple' questions and then reminded that all answers are found in the tome they refer to as the user manual. the open source community needs to mature a bit more and lose it's elitist reputation if it wants to garner the attention of the lay computer user. while i usually don't make much effort to associate myself with the community, i do support their cause and hope that they get better recognition.
