i just signed up for dsl and i'm doubting its gonna be what i expect it. they say 1.5 mbs. anyone use dsl out there. what speeds you getting. whats your location. cable internet around my parts is 60.00/month compared to 30.00 for dsl.

my cable is roughly 10 times as fast as my dsl was

Get Cat6 cable for your DSL. When I built a new comp in November and put together a network, I bought that cable for everything. A noticable difference over Cat 5.
I've had DSL for over 5 years, had cable modem for a bit in college as well.

interesting. i'll try that out and see. i know cable is faster than dsl. but 60.00 a month is a lot esp. since i still paying school loans. lol.

jevad, I lied a little. i have what used to be called Comcast Pro, which costs 95 a month and is 4m something down (supposedly) and 384 or something up- which no longer exists as a new option. The same speeds are offered by their newer "home networking" package for $55, but that's pc only. I really should switch to the regular $49 service, which is almost as fast, except it's not quite as fast upstream, so I've stayed with my overpriced "pro" package. It goes down once in a while for a few hours. Phone suppport varies in quality. but overall, it works well enough for me

cheers paul - all useful info

here is the deal with DSL,
DSL runs over OLD Copper phone lines, and is therefor limited by a number of factors,
the biggest is the distance an adequate signal may travel. what this means for you.
The further you are from your Phone CO (where all phone lines end up in your city) the weaker the signal and therefor SLOWER SPEEDS.now if you are right near the CO you should be able to expect close to advertised speeds, but the further you are the slower it gets. I was about 3miles away from my CO when i had DSL and i was paying for 1.5/MBS and i was only getting 256/kps on average.
now if i changed my plan to just 256 or even 512 my actual speed would drop in relation since the signal is degrading over the old copper line.
thats why cable is so much better, Cable is actually using FIBER-OPTIC Lines which is FAST,since it is LIGHT and can travel GREAT DISTANCES without degrading.

weird thing is.. over here dsl (we call it adsl) is waaay faster then cable, but it might be the ISP..

one more thing,
DSL's only advantage that i can tell over cable is you can get plans where you have 2MBS UP AND DOWN. again if your close to the CO
right now i am paying 29.99/month for 2.0Mb/s Down and 256 Kb/s UP, but i am not running any servers out of my apartment so the upload speed is fine with me.

Bulldog DSL offers 4mbit down, 400k up in central London...but you have to live near the right exchange...

I tried both and find DSL way faster. I know I'm special.

ADSL, faster than a rabbit
- ribit0
and a Robin Reliant travelling at 60mph is much faster then a Porsche doing 40mph...
what does this tell us?

hu, I don't know
