    here is the deal with DSL,

    DSL runs over OLD Copper phone lines, and is therefor limited by a number of factors,

    the biggest is the distance an adequate signal may travel. what this means for you.
    The further you are from your Phone CO (where all phone lines end up in your city) the weaker the signal and therefor SLOWER SPEEDS.

    now if you are right near the CO you should be able to expect close to advertised speeds, but the further you are the slower it gets. I was about 3miles away from my CO when i had DSL and i was paying for 1.5/MBS and i was only getting 256/kps on average.

    now if i changed my plan to just 256 or even 512 my actual speed would drop in relation since the signal is degrading over the old copper line.

    thats why cable is so much better, Cable is actually using FIBER-OPTIC Lines which is FAST,since it is LIGHT and can travel GREAT DISTANCES without degrading.
