Well, most fonts that you find free online are generally not the best. Most require at least a whole lot of "hand" kerning. So, if you are going to set a book or a magazine I would recommend using a well-crafted font like those from: Adobe, Emigre, Underware, or even some of the fonts over at T26 and YouWorkForThem.

any recommendation for nice/decent font collections? i checked out the adobe font folio and thats for about $4,999, ouch! but it does have about 2000 fonts. so i guess i am looking for something not so huge.

try and choose a nice font you dont have and charge your client... otherwise just buy the adobe font library or something, depends what yor after really.
