when i was applying to schools, they were far more interested in seeing drawings and paintings than any attempts at design. i figure they were looking for raw talent to focus towards design later on.

They want to see the inside of your brain. Show them ideas.
Lots of them.

ok, sorry. i'll be serious, yeah, i'd say showing natural skill in drawing is important for base skills, concepts are generally developed later but are equally important in getting acceptance. show breadth of style and range of ideas. good presentation is a must, make everything beautifully put together when you send or present the work, that's extrememly important and reflects both on your attention to detail and work ethic.
good luck!

I think in germany they are very keen on accurate drawings etc. But the best thing to do is to post your question on http://www.designmadeingermany.d… I know there are quite a number of design students there, who might be able to help you out.

Keep in mind that many schools have a certain template for portfolio presentation. E.g you can only send in a A3 or A2 size portfolio, so that all applicants will have the same opportunity.
I am going to apply for a school in denmark, and i was thiking about making a book, they would not accept that.
What school are you applying for?

I think here they do not have any templates, because a girl i know made like 2 or 3 books and some drawings and she got acepted. But for example they dont like to see expensive materials because in that case they think you are trying to "blend" them. Th school i'm trying to get in is the FH gestaltun mannheim http://www.fh-mannheim.de/gestal… , its not the best one but i dont want to move put again rigth now.
