IM Virus

Anyone have any info on this? It's an IM that gets sent with a link and the link has a virus. What does this do? how do you get rid of it?
info would help, and let's start a help thread for this cuz i know that this is going around everywhere.

i have heard of it. my friend had it, when you sent him the first message of a convo it would reply with "hey this is a cool site, check it out"
also latley i keep getting message from people i do not know with a link. of course i do not click on them.
if you had an internet security program i am sure it would prevent the virus from getting installed if you clicked the link.

It's not a virus, but it is a fine advertising ploy to take advantage of the idiots who continually fail to read the fine print, and trust everyone. Meh.

you can prolly get a rid of it by either going to add/remove programs or running lavasoft ad-aware

The one that's spreading right now is adware based, but there has been a worm that spreads via email first then attach itself to email contact list as well as IM buddy list---and they are actual virus. Most of them so far have been pretty low-risk, simple nuisance of showing some porn or popups or stealing your IM profile info (which is available mostly on IM directories anyway), but eventually someone will figure out very pervasive worm that will spread via IM.
Simple precaution and constant updating of your anti-virus definition would prevent most of such attacks.

um. run adaware and spybot, run an antivirus, pray to whatever deity that you worship.
