I don't think anyone really means anything bad by the homosexual remarks. Bad choice of words but its kinda like calling someone a fag, doesnt mean what they are saying. Thats just from my experience though.

I can crash my XP Pro box just by searching for a font in Word with the fonts displaying in the pull down menu.
YAY for stability!

that's software, not the OS. any coder could create an application to crash an OS. doesn't mean it's not a good OS.

i enjoy the good 'ol homosexual joke as much as the next guy, but when homosexuals might be abroad, i keep the jokes to myself. i've learned what's acceptable to say around homosexuals from all my gay friends, and calling one of them a fag isn't acceptable unless you're gay yourself. kinda like a white guy calling a black guy "nigger"...

I wish I could see this... I only get the audio. sounds funny. guess that what I get for still running 9.2.2

But abstrakt, the OS can't even keep itself from crashing entirely. If word crashes on my ibook, it says "Hey, word just crashed but everything else is fine." Winows goes "grk, urk, ugh....bleaaahhh...."
That's OS! Not to mention Microsloth makes both items.

a good OS will not let an application crash the whole system.

the problem with apple is that they revealed that computers can have these novel characteristics like class, ingenuity, and user-friendliness.

Not sure what's wrong with your system Gilt but I've been running XP pro for a pretty long time now (1 year +) and haven't had the OS crash on anything. Apps have occasionally crashed, but never the whole system.
- abstrakt0
yeah man, who said anything about crashing the whole system? like i said, my system has crashed once in two years because of my video card drivers. when an app crashed in XP, the app crashes. nothing else. hell, when you have more than 2 apps open on os9 you can hardly navigate the damn computer.

Well I'm not sure what to say. I've been running this box for a good year and a half I think. I've loaded every update that ever pops up. It's an Athlon 1800+ with 512RAM and at least a 32mb video card.
It's a hand built system, nothing crazy. I don't run any BS software (shareware and what not). But then again, people here at work have tried to sabotage my box before. Maybe someone's screwin' with my system on the weekends.

abstract - dude, stop talking about OS 9, it's like comparing a good version of Win 98 to XP, and if your work is still use 9 then that says a lot about your work ;o) if you would just spend a week on OS X I guareentee you'll see the light.
At work unfortunately I have to deal with XP PRo with 1G of ram, and it is still struggles when I use certain programs (usually not MS made) and I often crack myself and IT guy when the Task Manager is "not responding" LOL!
Where as my OS X at home runs like a dream! It does thing I want it to - even force quiting something...

a few of our machines have os9 still because quite a few programs just flat-out won't run in OSX. i'll rag on OS9 too because when OSX wasn't out, you mac users were still saying it kicked windows' ass. os9 sucks. windows 98/2000 were both pretty darn good operating systems. the creative director next to me uses OSX. he's the one who slaps the table when OSX crashes. he slaps the table a lot. anyways, at home i have a 933mhz with 512mb ram and i do photo restoration on 1gb PSDs in Photoshop with it. try doing that on our OSX G4 here at work and be prepaired to have a day to kill.

I can't help laughing everytime one of these silly Mac-PC discussions appear... They're just fucking mahines, not Gods or sacred things which will save your lives ;) Mac users are way freakier than PC ones tho... Oh, I love my machine, she's so beautiful. Look, she's the light of my life! :P C'mon... Some PCs crash all the time, some Macs do that too. It all depends on luck, just as many things (and much more important ones) in life. Relax, take a deep breath, use The Force, think! And don't defend your machines as if they were your children...

ok no more mac bashing. i love how quick OSX's file searching is. windows' file system takes forever to search through. and try emptying the recycle bin. microsoft decided it would be a good idea to check each file as it's being removed. same with emptying IE's cache. that can take a good 10 minutes if it occupies a big chunk of space. and yeah, the look has to be improved. the next windows should be pretty awesome. microsoft is realizing how important looks are.

Hate to continue the Mac vs PC thing... but...
I normally use OSX (and lovin the search-as-you-type thingy), but using XP a little... not impressed with the task-oriented sidebar stuff... It all feels so dumbed down and doesnt offer all the tools you need to find stuff.. And how do I get folder sizes to show in Windows Explorer? (Do I have to use a third-party program (I can understand that there are a lot of cheap/useful add-ons available for Windows)... just seems so strangely clunky sometimes for a system that holds such a huge market share?
- abstrakt0
ribit, learn to use right-click. it does marvelous things in windows. for example, right click on a folder and choose Properties.

LEFREAK, it's not just a machine, it's my freaking life. i wake up the morning, drive to work, and sit on this machine for 8 hours. i don't want a slow machine. i don't want people saying my machine sucks. i don't want people saying that what i do is better done on another machine. this is kinda funny cause that's exactly what i'm saying to the mac people, but hey... they started it :)

Until computers can roll joints, pour you a beer or give the best oral sex EvAR!...
...they're all shite.
