Is there a way to measure the distance of a line in illustrator.
what I want to do, is try and get an accurate distance of my jogging route...by drawing over (in ill) a scaled map of the area.
Ill seems to give the height and width of a segment..but not it's atual length
any advice would be appreciated?

you can use the grid. use show grid to see the the grid (you can set snap to grid as well) and in the prefs you can change the grid specs. don't know if that helps.

or pythagoras?

why don't you use a pedometer when jogging..?

Pedometers are inaccurate as they measure footfall...and assume your stride is the same each time.
What I need is for illustrator to tell me the lenght of a line segment and arc lenght, etc rather than the dimensions of the bounding box the line segment/arc.

select the line tool > click once on the canvas > voila.......

....or select windows > select info >

i don't think you can do that by default in illustrator. basically you want to execute math functions to calculate distances. maybe there's a plugin for it. don't know. but sounds more like you should work in a cad application to do that (or you have to do it manually).

I think you may be right...I can remember doing something like this in a CAD application.
As I don't have one, I was sort of hoping there might be somehting in illustrator that would do the same thing.

there is a cad plugin for illustrator. i don't know how advanced it is and if you can use it to calculate distances. it's called CADTools, by hot door. you can check it out at http://www.hotdoor.com

Cheers for the help!

Why can't you use the measure tool? It scrolls out from the eye dropper. It wouldn't work for a curve, though.

if i remember correctly measure tool doesn't smart-snap :(

Did anyone see Perrier award winner Dimitri Martin on BBC Four last night? A very clever and funny man who’s obsessed by numbers and charting his life with them. Recommended if you get the chance to see him.
