I think one fine example of someone who didn't start early is Mutombo. He started playing basketball when he was 18. The guy didn't even play basketball for fun before that.

A child of a broken home, Hackman left home at 16 for a 3 year hitch with the Marines. Moving to New York after being discharged, Hackman worked in a number of menial jobs before studying journalism and Television production on the G.I. Bill at the University of Illinois. Hackman would be over 30 years old when he finally decided to take his chance at acting by enrolling at the Pasadena Playhouse in California. Legend says that Hackman and Dustin Hoffman were voted "least likely to succeed".

Did you noticed that all the successful people, especially singers, actors, producers and directors have been doing what they do since the age of 6 or so.
Anybody heard of somebody who's successful who just started out?

one of my favourite singer/songwriters nikolai dunger was a pro footballer until he was about 30 then he was 'descovered' singing from his hotel balcony after he became a landscape gardener when he retired.

according to the book 'drawing on the right side of the brain' vincent van gogh started learning to draw when he was 27. the book also shows one of his early drawings, which was quite iffy, next to a drawing 2 years later, and showed an amazing difference.
