What was your final cost? Toastie and Helvetica?

Helvetica
get a 200G Western Digital Serial ATA drive.
Get an Adapter Dual Connect 3 USB 2.0 ports and 2 FireWire Ports I have it it's great.
Other then that make sure you get a good motherboard mabe one with more slots to fill for RAM for upgrade purposes but it should have 4 some have more slots i think not sure. Your right don't get a Floppy but Formating a PC just using a WinXP CD won't delete all files from what i heard so u might think about using a bootdisk when u format mabe u can use a older floppy from a older computer when u need to format. DVD-R I suggest LG DVD -R because it supports all FORMATS and its fast aswell but it supports all formats other DVD-R don't from what i hear. Also You might wanna think about getting a AMD 64 Chip you will be forced to upgrade to 64 in couple years to take advantage of 64bit applications this way you can run 32bit and 64 the new AMD 64 Athlon 3800 is a great choice, it's either 3800 or 3400. It's performes aswell as Intel sometimes better in certain aspects. But yeah other then that Get a good motherboard I hear Asus makes good boards but id read up ask around on Toms Hardware Forums etc.... Hope this helps. Also if your getting a new Case I suggest Lian Li PC70 you can google it up and see a review its an amazing case I think apple based its G5 case design on that case, this case was like 4 years released prior to G5 release. I have this case and it rocks good on heat and dust control.

ya i should get more ram for mine. but that spoils the sexy pricetag :)
- vwsung18t0
get like 2 gigs of ram and run windows off the ram permanently, it will be ridiculously fast

Windows and 32bit CPU's can only take advantage of 2G of RAM that is why G5 don't impress me cause they can run 8 Gig of Ram 32bit dosn't take advantage of it. Thats why AMD 64 is superior right now it can support 16G of RAM cause of its 64bit compatiability, although u have to wait for Win64 thats coming out this year or run RedHat 8 which is 64bit supported.

a friend of mione that had a mac really wanted to compare the 3D power of our setups.. he has a dual 1.25 wiith 1,5 gig of ram..
i felt so bad for him when he rendered the Bryce scene in 2 hours against 47 minutes on mine...
so sad..
his mac was more than 4000 euros...
- bomy_dick0
now u've got cash and u want Horsepower : no problemo mate : put in some PC4000 RAM from Corsair and a 3.2 ghz P4 extreme edition a 1200 euros .. and blow anyone around...

Also don't upgrade monitor, in a year or two 20 inch LCD will be cheap and essential in using Longhorn because of the side bar.
- bomy_dick0
when i think that io was fuill on with macs.. i wouls have done anything to have a mac a few years ago.. incredible how the PC worl has changed and is becoming so attractive and flexible..
- vwsung18t0
not too many people need 16GBs or ram. you can also get solid state hard drives, which are just hard drives that use sticks of ram
- bomy_dick0
i'm off. so many typing mistakes : i'm wrecked
g' night everyone

In my opinion your wasting your money id wait till 2005 like middle/late 2005 CPU speeds are going to be around 5G Longhorn will be out Ram will be 16G of ram supported on motherboards since win64 and longhorn will be able to take advantage of it. PC cases are announced to change dramatically as in ASX setup its all changing wait for longhorn then upgrade. Just my 2 Cents.
- toastie0
good lord, when Longhorn comes out, im going 100% linux.
