I'm looking to buy a Digital SLR for use in studio photshoots. The images will have to be high enough quality to be used in magazines (300dpi) and billboards (600dpi).
Has anyone got any recommendations, i've got a budget of £1000 to £2000.

Nikon D100 although apparently the Fuji S2 is perhaps better value

do they take the pics at 300dpi? Or, as i've heard do they take them at 72dpi, but with a larger pixel ratio. IE, 4000 X 3000 PX?
- rasko40
yeah but all cameras do that, at least, thats how all the digi photography I get in at work is supplied, remember that an image doesn't actually have a res, just a pixel size, its purely header info that renders the image @ 300dpi

coz pixels ain't got sizes

cool, cheers guys. Looking at a Canon 10D at the moment.
Any more tips about professional studio digital photography though would be really welcome.

check with the 10d that you are able to get .tiffs from it and not just raw or jpegs, I hear the raw files come in at about 8-9mb when you would expect to get a 17.5mb tiff, not sure how it works but I'd ask about it.

Leica Digilux 2 looks very nice... when it finally comes out over here ]:7(

my understanding is that raw is good, but i may be wrong
i have the sigma sd10 which only saves in raw advantages as follows which are only 5-7 mb hence alot more images on the flash memory card, these are converted to tiff by the software, recording raw data also gives the ability to alter the image in it's raw mode, for example i can change the white balance of the image, so if i forgot to change it when i shot the pic, i can change it later - this changes the raw data, it is not the same as pisssing around in photoshop after saving to tiff
however the disadvantage is that you need the manufacturers software to convert the raw file, as i think that raw files are in a form determined by the manufacturer - ie all raw files are not the same
- rasko40
yeah thats right, raw are better files and then you put them through something like Leaf to convert as I understand. I just think thats its good to be able to choose tiff's for ease and speed of use which gives you a high res image with no compression.

agreed, but if you are someone, like me, who likes to faff around with them tweaking and tweaking, then raw is good, but the option is better than just raw i guess

The 10D doesn't do tiff's. It's JPEG or Raw. Hmmmm, probably not much of a problem about the memory because it's going to be set up in a studio with a PC, so the data can be checked out there and then. But i guess there may be occasions when it'll have to go out and about.

You could check out the Pentax *ist D.
- stimuli0
Yeah, the Pentax *ist D got 4.5/5 in MacUser. Well worth a look. Also check out the Canon EOS300D.

Another link. (5/5 MacUser).

I second Jame's vote, that Leica Digilux 2 is at once the most attractive and probably best quality camera (within that price range).

If you are into really high-end digital shoots. They're is absolutly no competition to an Imacon digital back hooked to a medium format camera.
- meok0
oh I forgot your budget. No Imacon then.. http://www.headshotsrentals.com/…

I got the digilux 2 a few weeks back... it is superb!
