my understanding is that raw is good, but i may be wrong
i have the sigma sd10 which only saves in raw advantages as follows which are only 5-7 mb hence alot more images on the flash memory card, these are converted to tiff by the software, recording raw data also gives the ability to alter the image in it's raw mode, for example i can change the white balance of the image, so if i forgot to change it when i shot the pic, i can change it later - this changes the raw data, it is not the same as pisssing around in photoshop after saving to tiff
however the disadvantage is that you need the manufacturers software to convert the raw file, as i think that raw files are in a form determined by the manufacturer - ie all raw files are not the same
