Myself and some friends from here in Dublin are planning to go away for the summer, most likely to America, and our first choice is San Francisco..
We have to get J1 visas and all that malarky sorted out soon so we're trying to see if we're going to be able to get half decent jobs and live somewhere half decent for the summer..
Basically if anyones living there right now would you be able to do me a massive favour and answer me this:
• Whats the job situation like (A design job would be lovely (graphic or industrial design) but bar work/hotel work or something like that would go down grand with all of us?
• Whats the accomodation situation like? i.e. could we get somewhere decent to live close to the main action areas?
I'd seriously appreciate any help on this.. thanks in advance..
(Probably not the best idea to post this on a Saturday morning but I can always bump on monday morning i suppose)

Hmm.. there's still work around.
I guess a lot of designer still thinking it's 1999...Try out Craigslist.com.
If you're looking for cheap place to stay... I would recomment the classified in Chinese news paper.. (^_^) usually they have pretty cheap rent...email me if you need helps.
I'm in SF

pretty much its still slow, but steady here. The best way to find a job here is connections. Start making connections now somehow.
as far as living situation... the bay area is one of the most expesive in the US. If you are going to be living together with friends it will be much easier to live here.... aka renting a 2 bedroom place still runs 1500 and way up from there in decent areas.
anyway... the bay area is nice ...
it has everything.

here's the link to craigslist:

http://www.craigslist.org/med/honestly, the job situation here is not so bad as it was, say, last year. Still not easy to make it but it's not hopeless.
the housing situation however... prepare to pay out the ass if you want to live within the city.

Cheers for all this help.. Really appreciated..
heh the joy of living in Ireland in the 21st century - our renting prices are actually more than yours right now so living looks like its going to be cheap for the summer for me!

the job situation really isnt THAT bad. if you have stellar work, I'm sure you could get a temporary, if not a permanent job. three of my freinds just got jobs in the field and they are all pretty well paid. I would say the market is definatelly picking up.
as far as rent goes, i live in the mission, with is near downtown and lots of bars/restaurants and i pay 700 for a room in a apartment with 4 other house mates. It really isnt that bad, our place is really big.
so i would recomend getting in touch with someone before coming, dont just show up. Talk to employers before you come.

You'll find that nearly all the rented accommodation require you to sign a one year lease or a six month one if your lucky. They also see you Irish Students coming over every summer signing long leases and then doing a runner when your visa has expired .They’ll know your there just for the summer so they wont touch you . I met 'allot' of Irish out there on the J1 and most were staying in the hostels. The thing is too the tortoise hostel only lets you stay for a maximum of 12 days, but I remember the globe hostel had a deal if you paid monthly. Best thing I found is to get help from other Irish people who are living there if you know any, they always seem to help out each other with accommodation and fake papers. :) And for Jobs California is the hardest place to find work over the summer, be prepared to fill out a shit load of application forms, you wouldnt believe how much shit they ask and put you through for just a shit job at starbucks. Good luck you’ll need it!!
