You'll find that nearly all the rented accommodation require you to sign a one year lease or a six month one if your lucky. They also see you Irish Students coming over every summer signing long leases and then doing a runner when your visa has expired .They’ll know your there just for the summer so they wont touch you . I met 'allot' of Irish out there on the J1 and most were staying in the hostels. The thing is too the tortoise hostel only lets you stay for a maximum of 12 days, but I remember the globe hostel had a deal if you paid monthly. Best thing I found is to get help from other Irish people who are living there if you know any, they always seem to help out each other with accommodation and fake papers. :) And for Jobs California is the hardest place to find work over the summer, be prepared to fill out a shit load of application forms, you wouldnt believe how much shit they ask and put you through for just a shit job at starbucks.
