Put him in the trunk. As long as he does't smell like weed you should be fine.
Did you try calling them and asking? Not sure where you might find that number but...
I've gone through the border without having to show many times....yet this was before the US went all wacked out after Sept 11th.

I recently went to Canada and back under very conspicuous cirumstances and had no problems. Everyone involved had Passports or Birth Certificates and Drivers Licenses. The people at the border seemed to not give a f*** quite frankly.
I'd say it is safe to risk it as long as your uncle is white. ;)

Technically, at least some photo ID birth certificate will be necessary (for Canadians entering the USA at least--I'm not sure about other nationalities).
The trouble you run into will completely depend on where you're crossing the border. I frequently cross between New Brunswick and Maine and 95% of the time US agents don't even check IDs (even post-Sept 11). But, this is a very rural crossing. At urban crossings, agents are much more up-tight. Either way, land crossings are WAY for more lax than entering the USA by air.
Be advised that racial-profiling is in full-effect and probably won't help out your case.
If they don't ask questions, you'll be cool. But if they're suspicious for whatever reason, you might run into a lot of trouble.
